#stonewall50years

For the Amsterdam Pride 2019 the canal parade participants were asked to join forces under the “Remember the Past, Create the Future” mantra. The chosen mantra is connected to a historical turning point in the LGBTQ+ history known as the Stonewall riots. The riots, also called Stonewall uprising, are a series of violent confrontations that began in the early hours of June 28, 1969, between police and gay rights activists outside the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in the Greenwich Village section of New York City. Stonewall is a known sanctuary for drag queens, who were not always welcomed even at other gay bars. It was also a favorite haunt of underage and homeless members of the LGBTQ community.

The ‘Stop! In the name of Love!’ boat presented by 3LAYERS Foundation chose to commemorate the Stonewall Uprising with a double act.

Act I:

As the boat rolls from underneath the bridges of Amsterdam into the canal we see drag queen Jennifer Hopelezz and her friends being pushed down and hurt by a group of police officers. The performance is a clear simulation of the events that took place in NY on June 28. In the backdrop of the performance are printed pamphlets and posters used in 1969.

Act II:

A brutal battle for freedom unfolds and is dramatically interrupted when more than 120 protectors stand up, raise their hands and start singing ‘Stop In The Name of Love’ by The Supremes. This song was released in the same year 1969.

The combination of the two acts brought surprise and opportunity for remembrance and joy. By enacting both emotions, that are still very present as the LGTBQ+ community grows and evolves, one experienced an immense sensory interaction both as participant on the boat and as participant on the canal flanks.

The ‘Stop! In the name of Love!” is rewarded by the Pride 2019 Jury with Best Theme Boat (1st prize).
